It is believed to be when the Gates of Hell are opened for spirits and ghosts to roam freely. Makeshift altars are erected at roadsides where giant joss sticks are lit and food offered. Staged operas are also conducted for the entertainment of ghosts, spirits, and the public on a nightly basis.
