In October 2015, a granite structure was uncovered and later identified as the Old Prangin Canal Basin by the Centre for Global Archaeological Research, Universiti Sains Malaysia. On 25 March 2018, the Sia Boey Rejuvenation Project was launched to transform Sia Boey into an area that facilitates the coexistence of development and heritage conservation. The Sia Boey Urban Archeological Park adds value to the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. It enhances the outstanding universal value with programming and space for the local people, restoring the shophouses and representing the coexistence of heritage conservation, cultural heritage education, urban greens, and sustainable development.

Sia Boey was an early trading hub in George Town with activities centered around the Prangin Canal, the 19th-century market hall, and the shophouses. The Hokkien name “Sia Boey” and the Malay name “Ujong Pasir” both mean “end of the town.” Sia Boey has always been a centre point for community engagement, where people come to meet and gather. Today Sia Boey is home to Penang’s latest Instagram superstar: koi fish-filled revitalised Prangin Canal. It also features aged-old trees and a super cool playground for the kids to let off some steam.
