CHOWRASTA MARKET

The original Chowrasta market was built in 1890 within the settlement area of South Indian immigrants. In Urdu, the market’s name is translated into “four cross roads”. After a few renovations, Chowrasta stands today as the biggest and greenest market in Penang.

Chowrasta market sees a lively gathering of locals doing their daily purchasing of fresh produce plus cheap and cheerful household items and clothing. It’s a perfect place for visitors to people watch and get local souvenirs like tau sar piah (bean-paste biscuits) and preserved nutmegs for a considerably lower price than other tourist spots. A must visit is the second-hand bookshop upstairs that has a collection of used books stacking up to the ceiling.
