Air Itam Dam has been said to be the first dam to be built on Penang island and the first major engineering project by George Town's City Council. At 700 feet above sea level, the water catchment area is around the corner from Penang Hill. Building or construction of the dam was between 1958 and 1962 and the then Governor of Penang, Raja Tun Uda Al-Haj bin Raja Muhamad officially opened the dam on 8 Dec 1962. Today, it's a favourite spot for joggers and also for picnics. There's a great panoramic view of George Town from its peak. This dam is one of three dams on Penang island, the other two being Teluk Bahang Dam and Mengkuang Dam.
